The Calipatria Hornets and the Vincent Memorial Scots went to battle Saturday, October 9th, 2021 in a Desert League contest at Cal Jones Field in El Centro, CA. While Calipatria had the game tied at 7 early on in the first quarter, and kept the game at 7-14 until the early part of the third quarter, the Scots would break away fast and balloon their lead from midway in the third quarter on, with the final score being 41-7 in favor of Vincent Memorial.
For the Hornets, junior Alex Fernandez had the lone touchdown of the game from 31-yards-out. Fernandez also assisted with a key deflection on the defensive side of the ball, preventing the Scots from going up 21-7 in the 2nd quarter. Junior Angel Morales accounted for a sack in the 1st quarter of the game. Senior Jacob Zendejas threw key passes in trying to help the Hornets mount the comeback against the Scots. On the defensive side of the ball, Zendejas also assisted Fernandez with the key deflection that prevented the Scots from taking the 21-7 lead in the 2nd quarter.
For the Scots, sophomore quarterback Jacobo Elias (23-32, 331 yds, 3 TDs passing) (8 carries, 62 yds, 3TDs rushing) was the standout player for Vincent Memorial in this game, accounting for every single one of the team’s points on the board, even kicking all of the team’s extra points. Elias had touchdown throws of 47-yards, 84-yards, and 15-yards. On the ground, the sophomore had touchdown runs of 2-yards, 13-yards, and 7-yards. Senior wide receiver Diego Elorduy had 8 receptions for 179 yards in this game, as well as 2 touchdown receptions, the first, a 47-yarder to open up scoring in the game, and the second a 84-yarder to put the Scots up 28-7 with 2:19 left in the third quarter. Junior wide receiver Max Ascolani had one touchdown reception in this game, a 15-yard touchdown pass from Elias for the final touchdown of the game. On the defensive side of the ball, Senior Juan Carlos Bejarano and freshman Manuel Montano had interceptions in the 4th quarter. Senior Diego Santillan and freshman Emilio Fimbres were each credited with one sack each in this game.
With the loss, the Calipatria Hornets fell to 2-5 on the season. The Hornets traveled to Pine Valley this past Friday night to take on the Mountain Empire Red Hawks in another Desert League matchup but lost 0-27, still being winless in the Desert League. Calipatria will be back in action Friday night when they host the St. Margaret’s Tartans of San Juan Capistrano, CA in a non-league matchup before hosting their rivals in the Holtville Vikings next Thursday night in the Axe Game.
With the victory, the Vincent Memorial Scots improved to 5-2 on the season. The Scots traveled the short distance to Holtville this past Friday night to take on the Vikings in another Desert League matchup but were defeated in the contest, 27-43, making their Desert League record 2-1. Vincent Memorial will be back in action Friday night when they travel to Blythe to take on a tough test in the Palo Verde Valley Yellowjackets, who are currently at the top of the Desert League standings, before taking on their cross-town rivals in the Calexico Bulldogs next Friday night in the “Battle of the Border”.
