The Brawley Wildcats played host to the Gila Ridge Hawks of Yuma on Saturday night at Warne Field in Brawley. At the end of the night, it would be the Wildcats who would come out on top with the big victory, 49-13. The Wildcats would build up their lead all in the first half, as all 49 of their points were scored before halftime.
For the Hawks, quarterbacks Smauel Manjarrez and Richard Bean made key significant throws in order for Gila Ridge to get on the scoreboard. Senior wide receiver Jonathan Noriega also added to the Hawks’ offensive yardage by catching a 26-yard pass from Manjarrez.
For the Wildcats, junior quarterback Ethan Gutierrez accounted for 149 passing yards and three touchdowns (one being a rushing touchdown). Senior running back and corner, Isaiah Young accounted for two pick-sixes defensively and one touchdown on the offensive side of the ball. Mehkye Washington, Brandon Porras, and Tanner Carranza had scores of their own as well, contributing to the Wildcats’ lead.
With the loss, Gila Ridge falls to 0-2, entering their third game of the season. Up Next for the Hawks will be another tough test when they host another Imperial Valley squad in the Imperial Tigers on Friday night in Yuma.
With the victory, Brawley improves to 3-2 on the season, winning 3-straight games after their tough first two matchups against Mater Dei Catholic (losing 53-21) and Valley Center (losing 17-6). Up Next for the Wildcats will be their last game before the IVL season kicks off in which they will play host to the Fallbrook Warriors on Friday night at Warne Field in Brawley.
